Subject matter close to my heart and life, and I highly recommend this book for anyone else who has had to live with this matter. I couldnt disagree more with the previous review. I have just finished reading this, after deciding to research NPD. It is written in a casual style, and is very much a personal story of the authors survival and development. I found many of her descriptions of home life mirrored my own, and certainly resonated with me on a deep level, validating my own experience. I would recommend it to anyone who believes they were raised by a narcissistic parent, you may find this a very useful tool.
The first clue to the book's content is that is it apparently self-published. The author clearly owns painful and convincing credentials as a survivor daughter of a narcissistic mother. (I believe the mother suffered additional mental illness/personality disorder but this was never mentioned.) As a confessional, writing the book must have been therapeutic as she struggled to find her Self. That she hopes her book will help others in similar trouble is a tad optimistic.
"Oscar Knight" (another clue) needs basic writing, grammar, and typing skills as well as the discipline of a good editor. All bibliography/endnote citations save one are websites, movies, and pop music lyrics. She relies on two dubious "authorities." Sam Vaknin is a disgusting self-described and self-aggrandized narcissist. 80's guru Scott Peck espoused the possible benefit of sexual relations between patient and therapist, and was revealed as a life-long womanizer when his 45-year marriage ended.
I found nothing in Oscar's advice that I think is harmful; neither did I find anything very helpful. Spend your money on "Will I Ever Be Good Enough?"
